Minutes 9/10/08 to 12/10/08

Thanks to our secretary Somia for sending me these!

From now on I will post these every week, but here are the minutes for the meetings so far this year.

Just in case you're wondering why it shows that they were posted on 9/10/08, it's just so that it won't show up on the front page, so you won't have to scroll down! These were really posted 1/6/09. :)

Minutes- 9/10/08
• First meeting of the school year
• Introduction of Officers
• Goals and purpose of our club
• Our first event will be MSABC
• We will have our first car wash to fundraise for MSABC

Minutes- 9/17/08
• Welcome
• Word scramble to find mission statement
~ The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
• Reminder about car wash (9/20/08)
~ Will be in the junior lot
• Reminder about club dues
• MSABC
~ October 25th in San Jose
~ First time being held there
• This is childhood and prostate cancer month

Minutes- 9/24/08
• Welcome and Introduction
• Money raised at car wash- $453.00
• Stand Up to Cancer Activity
~ Played new song from “Stand Up to Cancer”
~ Club members had to fill in the blanks with the artist’s name
~ Prize is an iTunes card
• If you buy the song on iTunes, money is donates towards a cancer foundation
• Facts about Prostate Cancer
• Fundraising Ideas
• Club dues- $5

~ Last year it was designed by Amber Normann

Minutes- 10/1/08
• Dana Ngyen won the iTunes gift card from our last meeting
• We will no longer pass around sign in sheets at meetings
• MSABC shirts can be ordered for $10
~ At the event, it will cost $15
~ Will be brown with pink writing
• Activity
~ Matching prostate/chlidhood cancer questions with the answers
• Octocer is Breast Cancer month
• Save Lids to Save Lives
~ Allie read the story of Susan G. Komen
~ We will be making it a school wide event and collecting in 4th perios classes
~ Winner will win a donut party
• Competition for a “No smoking” sign
~ You can draw, write, make a collage
• At the end of the year, we will have an event where people can donate their hair to Locks of Love
~ Ask friends and family to start growing their hair
• We need sweatshirt designs, so please turn any ideas in

Minutes- 10/8/08
• Breast Cancer Month
~ 1 in 8 women get breast cancer
~ Women over 40 should get checked by having mammograms
~ 1 in 1000 men get breast cancer
• Door to door this Saturday in Palomares Hills
~ Meet at the Recreation Center
~ Will go from 11-2
• Handed out MSABC flyer
~ October 25th in San Jose (begins at 8)
~ October 18th in San Francisco (club will not be going to this one)
• We will start collecting the yoplait lids after homecoming
~ Was approved by leadership
• Vote on what type of sweatshirt we wanted to over
~ No one wanted sweatpants
~ Winning color was navy blue
• Flyers are up for the “No Smoking” contest
• Selling starbucks was the most popular idea for fundraising week

Minutes- 10/15/08
• MSABC in San Jose- Saturday, October 25th
~ The team name is CVHS ACS Youth Club
~ Meet at the senior lot at 7:15
• Yoplait yogurt lid collection
~ Competition in 4th period classes
• We have commitement cards for those who want to cut their hair to donate

Minutes- 10/22/08
• MSABC
~ Sign up and information
~ Meet in senior lot at 7:15
~ We will come back around 12:30
• Next week is our fundraising week
~ We will be selling Starbucks coffee to teachers next Tuesday
~ Officers are making homemade muffins
~ Anyone who wants to help can come to school at 7:30

Minutes- 10/29/08
• Comparison between MSABC in San Jose and San Francisco
• We raised $200 by selling coffee and muffins to teachers
• Korrinne Croghan passed away yesterday
~ Had been fighting cancer

• Made cards to give to kids fighting cancer

Minutes-11/5/08
• Talked about sweatshirt designs
~ They will cost $24
• Winners of wordsearch
~ Prizes will be give out next week
• It is traditional schedule next week
~ There will not be a meeting since there are different lunches and we don’t have a room

Minutes- 11/19/08
• Lung Cancer Activity
~ Breathing through a straw for 1 minute
~ Simulates how it feels to breathe when you smoke
• Wordsearch winners
~ Won a key chain prize
• Sweatshirt order forms
~ $24 and you can personalize it
• Yoplait lids
~ Collected a total of 1856 yoplait yogurt lids
~ Mrs. McLeod’s class won with a total of 567 lids
• “No Smoking” art contest winners
~ Had many entries
~ We will post the top ten around the school and the top ten will get prizes

Minutes- 11/26/08
• We will be posting the art contest winners on Tuesday, December 16th
~ If you want to help come at 7:45
• Christmas Caroling on December 19th
~ We will find different hospitals and retirement homes

Minutes- 12/3/08
• Crane Folding
~ Our goal is to make 2,000 cranes
~ We will string them and then take them to the Oakland Children’s Hospital
• Ways that cancer helps people
• Christmas Caroling will be December 19th at Eden Hospital and December 21st at Eden Villa
• Crane Folding party at Allie’s house
~ It will be a potluck, so please bring food

Minutes- 12/10/08

~ Need to reach our goal of 2,000 cranes

~ It will be from 11-3

· Cervical Cancer Quiz

~ Women under 30 are most likely to get cervical cancer

· Final Yoplait count- 2,571

· Final paper crane count-2,660

~ Reached goal of 2,000

~ Officers will make more to get 3,000

· Daffodil Days

~ Represents hope and courage

~ Selling them at Safeway- Booth this Saturday from 10-4
